Which modules can be used?
Every framed module that can be installed vertically can be used. We recommend the use of bifacial modules.
What are bifacial modules?
Bifacial modules can generate power from sunlight shining on both sides of the module.
How are the modules attached to the racking?
The modules are attached to brackets that hold the module between two posts. The system uses the mounting holes in the module frame to connect the modules and the post brackets with bolts and nuts.
Can the system be installed in windy areas?
The Sunzaun racking system can handle wind speed up to 105 mph (167 km/h).
Can the system be installed in hilly areas?
Slopes up to 15° are possible.
How much space is there between Sunzaun rows?
We recommend a minimum row space of 26 ft. (8 m). The spacing can be increased to use agricultural machinery between the rows.
Why are the modules in a portrait orientation?
A portrait orientation of the modules has key benefits compared to landscape orientation:
- No horizontal rails are needed, so the design can easily be adapted to available modules
- Easier installation
- Less steel needed
- The mounting holes of framed modules can be used
- Easier Wire Management for big modules
- A variety of modules with different dimensions and power can be used
What does cable management look like?
The junction boxes of adjacent modules can be easily connected. The cables can be led through specially designed holes in the post
How does the energy output of a vertical design differ compared to traditional installations?
Traditional south facing inclined systems have a peak in production around noon. Vertical bifacial modules produce power mainly in the morning and afternoon. The supply in the afternoon matches the peak in electricity demand very well.
How is the efficiency of vertical panels compared to fixed tilt or tracked systems?
The difference in production is very small for higher latitudes. In more southern areas, the difference becomes bigger. The University of Leipzig, Germany, released a study that indicates a difference of 2% in annual production for vertical solar panels compared to inclined systems. (Source)
Are there any performance data or models?
The U.S. Department of Energy has a financial calculator that estimates cost and energy output for agricultural applications.
What is the power per acre?
Around 230 kW per acre with a standard configuration.
Do the modules always face east and west?
No, north-south orientations are possible as well.
How much power is 1 ft. of a Sunzaun row?
123W with a 550W module.
What are possible applications for Sunzaun?
There are a couple of innovative use cases for vertical solar panels:
- Agrivoltaics: Sunzaun can be integrated into farmland.
- Solarchitecture: The integration into existing infrastructure, e.g. as a fence for residential or public areas.
- Linear applications: Sunzaun rows next to highways, railroads or canals.
- Dream Vertical: Which applications can you imagine? Next to gas stations or carports? Get in touch to discuss your idea!
What are Agrivoltaics?
Agrivoltaics (or Agrisolar) is the co-location of agriculture and solar PV. This concept has multiple dual use benefits:
- Agricultural activities next to or under solar panels
- Potential to higher crop yield
- Reduction in irrigation costs
- Decreased need of manuring
- Additional revenue stream
What are the different types of agrivoltaics?
Agrivoltaics can be categorized in three types:
- Dual Use Agrivoltaics: Conventional Solar Farms with sheeps that graze under the panels
- Adaptive Agrivoltaics: Special designed solar systems that allow agricultural activities under or next to the panels
- Ag-Ready Agrivoltaics: Solar sites that allow large scale agricultural production with minimal restrictions on agricultural use
Which crops are suitable?
A lot of crops a suitable, very promising are the following:
- Shade tolerant crops
- light-limited/ scald prone crops
- crops that are vulnerable to hail, frost or drought
- Labor intensive crops

Can cattle graze next to a Sunzaun?
Yes, it can. However, depending on the animal you might want to install a separate fence to keep the cattle away from the modules.
What is Solarchitecture?
Solarchitecture is the integration of solar power into existing infrastructure, e.g. urban areas. Vertical solar panels can be installed as a fence for private property, next to carports or gas stations and supply electricity, for example for electric vehicles.
What does Dream Vertical mean?
This means all the new applications that are possible with a vertical solar system like Sunzaun. Imagine vertical solar next to miles of highways, railroads or canals. Or how about 7 ft. elevated panels on a parking lot?
